Apogee Search Scholarship Program
MIY: Market it Yourself

While search engine marketing has become one of the most profitable and measurable methods of advertising to niche B2B and B2C markets, advertising to a broader audience, more specifically 18-24 yr olds is a constantly evolving process. However with the advent of social media, advertising to this market has become easier, and more viral than ever before. Sites like Facebook, Myspace and Youtube have become integral elements when running a successful campaign targeted to 18-24 year olds.

This semester’s Apogee Search Scholarship Program wants students to put themselves in the minds of their advertisers and create a social media marketing campaign for a generic product or service (see rules) of their choosing.

What sites would you use to best target the 18-24 yr old market, and why do they fit your product? Is your campaign a hodgepodge of nonsensical humor that creates word of mouth? Is it an engaging viral campaign with the audience playing a game of hide and seek when trying to find the next link to an incentive or offer, or does it completely break the mold of contemporary social media campaigns all together? How will your campaign increase product awareness and sales?

Campaigns should be original (see rules) and must create a cohesive branding message throughout all social media sites. There are 10 social media websites (see rules) that may be used. Each campaign should create a message by using four of these sites, and one additional site to your discretion, for a total of at least five sites. In addition to the campaign a Product Outline (see rules), explaining your choices and directions, must accompany your entry.

Deadline for Entries is June 1, 2008. One undergraduate or graduate student will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of his or her best social media campaign. This opportunity is open to all graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in either a two or four-year college or university in the United States during the 2008-2009 school year.
