SEO is Dying! Again…

People have been discussing the imminent demise of SEO and SEO firms for several years now. This week, Mike Grehan jumped on the “SEO is Dying” bandwagon. I often agree with Mike’s opinions, but not this one.

The arguments always seem to boil down to the same “the web is changing” mantra. So far, these changes haven’t resulted in the death of the SEO industry.

That said, the web is changing, and the SEO industry must change with it. But, there’s nothing new there. Throughout the history of SEO, much of what worked two or three years before stops working. Any SEO firm that wishes to survive must grow and change as needed.

One could even argue that a changing environment is an advantage for SEO firms. They have the ability to recognize patterns across a variety of companies/situations in ways that internal teams cannot duplicate.

As an interesting aside, I was interviewed for the book Grehan mentions. Haven’t seen it yet, however. Supposedly, there’s a copy on the way.
